The Times. Nov 13 1868. Yesterday the ancient ceremony of nominating the sheriffs to serve in the ensuing year was held in the Exchequer Court, before a large audience. The nomination of the sheriffs for the English counties has been made from time immemorial on the 'Morrow of St Martin' and an Act passed in the present reign ordred that the nominations for the sheriffs of Wales should be in the same manner and at the same time as those for other counties, - namely by the Lords of the Council, who there fore nominate three gentlemen in every county in England and Wales with the exception of Middlesex (the sherrifs for which are elected by the liverymen of London), and of the Duchy of Cornwall. From the list of names thus chosen by the Lords of Council the Queen 'pricks' those who are to serve the office, but generally the names first on the list are selected to serve, the others taking the office in succeding years, or serving should a vacancy be created by any unforseen event.

On the Bench were the Lord Chancellor, the Home Seceretary, the Chancelor of the Exchequer (who wore his gold robes of office), the Lord Chief Justice of England, Lord Chief Justice Bovill Lord Chief Baron Kelly, Mr Justice Lush, Mr Justice Byles,Mr Justice Smith, Mr Baron Channell, and Mr Baron Cleasby.

The ceremony commenced by the Quen's Remembrancer administering an oath to the Lord's of the Council that they would truly nominate those to serve office. The oath is in quaint Norman-French and when this was taken, the Rememberancer read the namesin each county of those whohas served and those who were eligible to serve. There were some excuses, one gentleman stating that his income was totaly inadequate to support the honour, and another that he was a captain in the Life Guards on full pay, and both were excused.

The following are the selections made:-
